This basic instruction refers to size 38/39, knitted with 2-3 mm needles in quality
Meilenweit from Lana Grossa (210 m/50 g). Measurements for other sizes are given in table of sizes (PDF).
Casting on:
Cast on 60 sts evenly across 4 needles (= 15 stitches on each needle), join in
round. End of yarn, and thus change of rounds, at centre back, between 1st and 4th needle.
Leg:
Work several centimetres in border patt (alt K1, P1). Cont in basic patt.
Suitable basic patt: small rib, cable or eyelet patt or simply stst. Work basic patt so
that sts on needles 2 and 3 are continued subsequently in patt g on top of foot, while sts
on needles 1 and 4 are worked in stst at the end of heel.
 Classic Heel:
When work measures approx. 20 cm start the heel. Leave the sts on needles 2 and 3
unworked and for the back of the heel work 28 rows in st.st on needles 1
and 4. Then work the heel turn divide the heel sts evenly over three
needles.
1st row (RS): knit the sts from needles 1 and 2, *slipping the last st from needle 2, knit
the 1st st. from needle 3 and psso, turn.
2nd row: Slip the 1st st purlwise, purl sts on needle 2, purling the last st of needle 2
tog with 1st st of needle 1, turn.
3rd row: Slip the 1st st purlwise, K sts on needle 2.
Rep from * until all sts on needles 1 and 3 are used up.
Pick up heel sts: divide the needle 2 sts on to two needles (originally
needle 4 and 1) and work in rounds again. K sts on needles 4 and 1, then pick up one st
from the heel edge in every 2nd row and in the corner between heel edge and leg make 1
st., picking up horizontal loop and K tbl. Work unworked sts on needles 2 and 3 in basic
patt. Pick up a further 15 sts (as described above) from the 2nd heel edge using needle 4
and K rem 5 sts. On needle 1 and 4 there are now 5 sts more than at the start of heel.
Decrease: in every 3rd row on needle 1 K tog second and third last sts, on needle 4: K1,
sl 1, K1, psso.
Rep until the same amount of sts are on needle 1 and 4 as at the beginning of heel.
Foot:
Work foot again in rounds. Work stitches on needles 2 and 3 in basic patt,
stitches on needles 1 and 4 in stocking stitch. When foot measures about 20 cm from centre
of heel start toe.
 Toe:
Work all stitches in stocking stitch. Decrease: on needles 1 and 3 K tog second and third
last sts, K last stitch. K 1st stitch on needles 2 and 4, slip 2nd stitch knitwise, K 3rd
stitch, psso. After 1st decrease round, work 3 rounds in stocking stitch, after 2nd and
3rd decrease rounds, work 2 rounds each in stocking stitch, after 4th, 5th and 6th
decrease round, work 1 round each stocking stitch, then decrease in every foll round until
8 sts remain. Thread end yarn twice through the 8 stitches and sew off.
