Materials: Lana Grossa "Qui" (90% merino extrafine, 10% polyamide; 140 m [153 yds]/ 50 g): 450 g black (col 7). Knitting needles, size 4.5 – 5 mm (US 7 – 8/ UK 7 – 6). One crochet hook, size 5 mm (US H/8 / UK 6).
Rib pattern: Rs row: edge st, * p2, k3, rep from * cont, and end with p2, edge st. Ws row:Work all sts as they appear.
Stocking stitch (Stst): K Rs rows, p Ws rows.
Crochetet border: Work foll crochet chart, rep patt rep between arrows cont. When several symbols meet at the top, these sts are to be crocheted off tog; when they meet at the bottom, they are to be worked in the same insertion point.
For the mini-dress, first make several pieces, then sew them tog foll the pattern. The gray shaded areas indicate the crocheted strips, which are sewn between upper and lower front and back pieces and to both sleeves.
Gauge: Stst: 17 sts and 27 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4" x 4"). Rib pattern, stretched slightly: 19 sts and 27 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4" x 4"). Crocheted strip: 15 sts of foundation = 10 cm (4"); 5 rows = approx. 5 cm (2").
Crochetet strips: For each of the crocheted strips for front and back, crochet a foundation of 71 ch and work 5 cm (2") foll crochet chart. For each of the crocheted strips for the sleeves, crochet a foundation of 43 ch and work 5 cm (2") foll crochet chart.
Lower back: Cast on 128 sts and work as foll: edge st, p2, k3, * p4, k3, rep from * cont and end with p2, edge st. In Ws row, work all sts as they appear. In the 29th row, dec 1 st in every other p-rib, except the two p-ribs at beg and end. In the 30th foll row, dec 1 st in each of the p-ribs which was skipped with the first incs, except the two p-ribs at beg and end. In the 20th foll row, dec 1 st in every other p-rib and again in the 20th foll row, dec 1 st in every p-rib which was skipped by the preceding decs. An even rib pattern has now been reached (= 94 sts). When work measures 45 cm (17 3/4") from beg, bind off all sts.
Upper back: Cast on 84 sts and work in Stst.When piece measures 6 cm (2 1/2") from beg, work armholes as foll: on each side of every other row, bind off 4 sts 1x, 3 sts 1x, 2 sts 1x, and 1 st 1x.When piece measures 25 cm (10") from beg, bind off center 10 sts for neck and complete each side separately, working neck shaping as foll: at neck edge, in every other row, bind off 3 sts 2x and 2 sts 1x. Simultaneously, when piece measures 25 cm (10") from beg, work shoulder shaping as foll: on outer edge, in every other row, bind off 5 sts 3x and 4 sts 1x.
Lower front: Work as for lower back piece.
Upper front: The upper front is worked in two halves. For the upper left front, cast on 42 sts and work in Stst. Work neck shaping on left edge as foll: dec 1 st in every 4th row 3x and 1 st in every 6th row 10x. Work armhole and shoulder shaping as for back. Work upper right front as for upper left front, reversing shaping.
Sleeve: Cast on 50 sts and work in Stst. For the sleeve shaping, inc 1 st on each side of every 6th row 2x and on each side of every other row 3x (= 60 sts). When sleeve measures 10 cm (4") from beg, shape sleeve cap as foll: on each side of every other row, bind off 3 sts 1x, 2 sts 1x, and 1 st 2x, on each side of every 4th row bind off 1 st 3x, and again on each side of every other row, bind off 1 st 6x and 2 sts 3x, then bind off rem 16 sts.
Finishing: Sew crocheted strip between upper and lower front pieces and between upper and lower back pieces. Sew crocheted strips to lower edges of sleeves. Sew shoulder seams. Crochet 1 row of dc over neck edge, then work 1 row of shell pattern as foll: 1 dc, * skip over 2 sts of preceding row, work 5 tr in foll st, skip over 2 sts of preceding row, 1 dc, rep from * cont. Sew side and sleeve seams. Set sleeves in armholes.
