Materials:

LANA GROSSA yarn "Silk" (50% silk, 27% viscose, 20% linen, 3% polyamide, mt = 120 m/50 g), for cardigan 450 (500) g sand (col 2), for top 250 (300) g white (col 1). One pair 4 mm and 4 1/2 mm needles; one 3 1/2 mm crochet hook and 4 buttons (from Union Knopf).
Rib patt: alt K2, P2.
G st: K all rows.
Ajouré patt: 1st row: edge st, * yo, P2 tog, rep from *, edge st. 2nd row: work as given for 1st row. Rep these 2 rows for patt.
Tensions: ajouré patt with 4 1/2 mm needles: 13 sts and 21 rows to 10 cm square; g st using 4 1/2 mm needles: 17 sts and 31 rows to 10 cm square.

CARDIGAN
Left front: cast on 43 (47) sts using 4 mm needles in sand and cont in rib patt as foll: edge st, K1, 40 (44) sts rib patt, edge st. Wwm 18 cm cont with 4 1/2 mm needles, on 1st row dec 1 st = 42 (46) 47 sts. From right edge work after edge st 30 (34) sts in ajouré patt, then over rem 11 sts work rib patt for attached border. Wwm 31 cm dec for neck shaping at left edge 1 st on every 4th row 3 times and 1 st on every 6th row 7 times, for dec P tog the 2 sts before border, work border sts as before. At the same time, after 35 cm from beginning, cast on for sleeve at right edge on every alt row 2 sts 4 times, 3 sts once, 4 sts once, 6 sts once, 7 sts once, 10 sts once and 15 sts once = 85 (89) sts. Wwm 59 cm = shoulder line, mark this line with a contrasting thread. Slip the 11 border sts on a spare needle. Cont in ajouré patt. For neck back inc at left edge on every alt row 1 st once and 2 sts once, slip the 77 (81) sts on a spare needle.
Right front: work in reverse to left front. In border work 4 buttonholes (= edge st, K2, P2, K2 tog, yo, P2, K2), 1st buttonhole 2 cm from lower edge, foll buttonholes spaced 9.5 cm apart.
Back: pick up the idle 77 (81) sts each of fronts and cast on 14 sts between = 168 (176) sts. Wwm 14 cm from shoulder line cast off for sleeves at each end on every alt row 15 sts once, 10 sts once, 7 sts once, 6 sts once, 4 sts once, 3 sts once and 2 sts 4 times = 62 (70) sts. Wwm 41 cm from shoulder line cont with 4 mm needles in rib patt, after edge st start with K1, before edge st end with K1. When border measures 18 cm cast off sts in rib patt.
To make up: for back neck band work over the 11 idle border sts each another about 8 cm in rib patt, then graft sts tog (or cast off and join seam). Sew neck band to neck edge. Along lower sleeve edges pick up 38 sts each and work between edge sts 8 cm in rib patt, then cast off. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons.

TOP
Front: cast on 66 (74) sts using 4 mm needles in white and work 18 cm in rib patt, after edge st start with K1, P2, K1 and sew on, end with K1, edge st. On last return row inc 14 sts evenly across = 80 (88) sts. Cont with 4 1/2 mm needles in g st. Wwm 33 cm cast off for armholes at each end on every alt row 3 sts once, 2 sts once, 1 st 5 times, then 1 st on every 4th row twice = 56 (64) sts. Wwm 35 cm cast off for neck the 12 centre sts and finish each side separately. At neck edge cast off on every alt row 3 sts once, 2 sts once and 1 st 4 times, then 1 st on every 4th row 4 times. When neck measures 18 cm cast off rem 9 (13) sts.
Back: proceed as given for front except: wwm 41 cm cast off for neck the 16 centre sts. At neck edge cast off on every alt row 3 sts once, 2 sts once, 1 st 4 times, then 1 st on every 4th row twice. When neck measures 12 cm cast off rem 9 (13) shoulder sts.
To make up: join shoulder and side seams. Along neck edge and armhole edges crochet 1 round dc and 1 round crab sts (= dc from left to right).
