Stripe sequence:
Note: since 2 RS rows and 2 WS rows are sometimes worked successively, stripe sequence should be worked with shorter circular needle. After having worked 1 of the 2 RS [WS] rows, sts are slid to other end of circular needle, where appropriate color is ready to be worked. Tip: cut small amounts of each color and paste them according to the stripe sequence to a piece of paper. Check off each color as you work it.
Full-fashioned decreases:
at beg of row, selvage st, p2tog; at end of row, work to last 3 sts, p2tog, selvage st.
Gauge:
18 sts and 25 rows average 4" [10 cm] in rev St st.
Back:
with shorter circular needle and charcoal/grey, cast on 107 (114, 121) sts. Work in garter st for 4 rows. Next, work in rev St st and follow stripe sequence for 6 rows. Shape sides: working full-fashioned decs, dec 1 st each end of needle on next row, then every foll 8th row 7 times, then every foll 6th row 4 times – 83 (90, 97) sts. Cont in rev St st and stripe sequence until back measures 14 1/4" [36 cm] from garter st. Place waist markers at right and left edge. Work 12 rows even. Inc 1 st each end of needle on next row, then every foll 12th row twice more – 89 (96, 103) sts. When back measures 7 1/2" [19 cm] from waist markers, shape armholes: working full-fashioned decs, dec 1 st each end of needle on next row, then every other row 8 times more – 71 (78, 85) sts. Cont in rev St st and stripe sequence until armhole measures 7 1/2 (7 3/4, 8 1/4)" [19 (20, 21) cm]. Shape shoulders and neck: bind off 4 (5, 8) sts at each shoulder edge once, 5 (6, 6) sts 3 times. At same time, on first row of shoulder shaping, shape neck as foll: work to center 29 (28, 29) sts, join another ball of yarn, bind off center 29 (28, 29) sts, work to end. Working both sides at same time, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge once. No sts remain.
Left Front:
with shorter circular needle and charcoal/grey, cast on 52 (56, 60) sts. Work in garter st for 4 rows. Next, work in rev St st and follow stripe sequence same as for back, working side shaping at right edge same as for back. At same time, when left front measures 17 (17 1/4, 17 3/4)" [43 (44, 45) cm] from garter st, shape front neck: working full-fashioned decs, dec 1 st at left edge once, then every foll 6th row 12 (12, 11) times, then every foll 4th row 2 (2, 4) times. When same length as back to armhole, shape armhole at right edge same as for back. When same length as back to shoulder, shape shoulder at right edge same as for back.
Right Front:
work same as for left front, reversing all shaping.
Sleeves:
with size 8 [5mm] needles and charcoal/grey, cast on 67 sts. Work in garter st for 4 rows. Next, work in rev St st for 2 (6, 10) rows. Shape sleeve: dec 1 st each end of needle on next row, then every foll 6th (8th, 14th) row 6 (4, 2) times more – 53 (57, 61) sts. Cont in rev St st until sleeve measures 6 1/4" [16 cm] from garter st. Place markers at right and left edge. Shape sleeve cap: working full-fashioned decs, dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 20 (21, 23) times. Bind off remaining 13 (15, 15) sts.
Finishing:
pin pieces to measurements and block with damp towels. Sew all seams. Sew sleeve seams to markers. With longer circular needle, charcoal/grey and beg at lower right front edge, pick up and k 296 sts along right front, back neck and left front edge. Work in garter st for 3 rows. Next [buttonhole] row: work 1 buttonhole at beg of right front neck shaping as foll: k2tog, yo. Bind off all sts on 8th garter st row. Sew in sleeves. Sew button.
